Mission

The mission of the Japan Association for Landscape Ecology (JALE) is to advance landscape ecology as a foundation for ecological land-use policies, ecological planning at national and regional scales, and ecosystem management. The Association seeks to facilitate the exchange of information among researchers, engineers, government officials, citizens, NGOs, and others interested in various aspects of landscapes and spatial patterns—including the development of theories on landscape structure and processes, applications to land-use planning, and practical activities for the conservation and restoration of landscapes and ecosystems—and to promote the use of theories and tools for problem-solving in diverse contexts. Members of JALE are expected to fulfill their respective roles and responsibilities in building a sustainable society in which ecosystem functions are continuously maintained and ecosystem services can be enjoyed on a lasting basis.

Vision

  • To share research findings and techniques in landscape ecology within the Association and to disseminate them broadly throughout society.

  • To establish a robust field of landscape ecology through genuine collaboration and active cooperation among people from diverse backgrounds, including the biological and ecological sciences, the social sciences, the humanities, and land-use planning.

  • To ensure that natural resource management, regional planning, conservation, and land-use policies based on landscape-ecological principles take root in society.
